Hey there,
I am looking for people who have been surfing for a long time and know a lot about the history of it. I want to make an exhibition on surfing maps, but need some background info...
I was hoping people here could help me with this. I thought it would be nice and handy to collect the info in a Wikipedia page, since that also does not yet exist for surfing as a game mode.
Any info about the origins of surfing, changes in map making, or whatever is useful information!
Also see the post on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/SkillSurfing/comments/4s50f0/we_need_a_wikipedia_page/
EDIT! :
Ok I have set up a Google Doc :) since there apparently already was a Wiki page but it got deleted (http://deletionpedia.org/en/Counter_Strike_Surf)
Disclaimer: I am a surfing noob, and English is not my native language so could really really use your help!!:

I know the origins of surf fall somewhere in CS 1.6 around 2003 / 2004 when players realized they could slide for short periods of time on the angled roofs of buildings. After playing around with the air_accelerate rates, early crude maps such as surf_ski and surf_egypt began to pop up.

one of my first experiment with surf is on cs_assault on cs 1.6. On the ct spawn point there is a building surrounded by an angled edge where you can perfectly surf on it ^^
there are some invisible part in the B site on dust2 that can be surfed to reach spots that are originally impossible to reach solo.
I'll continously edit this post if something pops out of my head ;)
here are other classic maps that i've played on cs 1.6 : surf_ninja, surf_greene, surf_x, and many more !

Thanks a lot already! Very cool, I did not know this :D
So surfing did start in CS (not some other game)?

Someone on Reddit is saying that surfing started before 1.6, and that it started in Quake.. What are your thoughts on that?

I know you want to make the page mostly on surf maps, but I think it would be interesting if you include information on the best surfers and how they rose and fell over time.

I agree that some info on big-time surfers should be included, but something about clans as well. If you have any good resources for this or info from personal memory please let me know.

From my experience, these are clans that you see the most on KSF CSS that have at least a few decent members:
κѕғ - used to invite only really good surfers, now mostly focuses on community contributors but still has many decent surfers.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/KSFClan
им - this clan is the only one that only invites really good surfers afaik, there are still a few people that aren't amazing anymore but were long time ago.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/nmsurf
иuяd - don't know much about them, I just see them often. I know greenvoid from that clan and he's pretty good.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/nerdsurf
иѕ - propably one of the newest clans that I had the chance to observe from it's very beginning. At the moment when they created the clan they weren't / were barely able to complete the easiest T6 maps, now some of them complete the hardest maps / bonuses / get top10s
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/NobodySurfing
Someone might help you with other clans, I was inactive for past few months so I'm not really updated on the current state.

The CSS skillsurf clans you would actually want to mention in any kind of surf history are KSF (with a mention to fragg co who ride low), sV (with a mention to sG), EGI, NM, intox, sI, PW, maybe sR. For tricksurf I don't really know many except for xdream and nightmare but theres probably others. I don't know anything about CSGO or TF2 clans.
Probably mapping groups and hubs like solidsurf, brokensurf etc too
edit: also you'd have to mention the ancient combat surf clans too as well as the super popular servers like DragonRock

U propably thought I listed surf clans history - I listed actual alive clans that are decent and worth mentioning.

K well you literally made up that entire description of KSF / NM then, and I have no idea why you would mention completely random new clans rather than clans that were massive like intox, sV, EGI, sI who all had amazing surfers, produced amazing maps and had entire communities built around them if you've been surfing that long. sV was p much at the forefront of the skillsurf hype for ages, sI had some of the best surfers at that time + mappers like Sandman/Ridder/ptad{?}/Fission, EGI had the first competitive surftimer server which was the predecessor to KSF's etc.
wtf are nurd and ns?

Daverina, add me: vonkehar3. If you want info about the tricksurf story 2010-now.
edit: And you could contact qr, if you want to know about the origin of surf in Quake.

I'm pretty sure Wikipedia won't let us publish this undocumented history of surf, let alone allow us to create a page for it. However, I'd love to make a "History of Surf" video with all of this information. If you've made a google doc or something, Daverina, I'd love to help you add to it and turn it into a script for the video.

A video would be really cool!
I was indeed hoping that there would be other sources available but there don't really seem to be any. What I liked about wikipedia is that it is easier to also get the rest of the internet involved in correcting and expanding. But I guess I will make a Google doc or folder later today (I'll keep you guys updated).
I am actually working on a (possible) exhibition on CS surfing, but first need to see if I can find enough info and material... FYI: if I think there is enough info, the expo will be held in Amsterdam somewhere upcoming September. It won't be in a real museum, but will be in a expospace in the city centre :) With pro gaming getting really big, I think surfing and mapping should also get more attention. It is a non-profit thing btw with zero budget

Would be interesting if someone could prove some informations about skillsurf cheaters, the most known from CS:S are probably SILAS'
& Vortex | Speedcore's sv_cheats bypass/host_timescale/host_framerate cheating

Steam.
The most common term to the surf category where people kill each other is: combat surf.
By the way, I like to distinguish combat surf in two parts: arena combat surf and linear combat surf.
Arena combat maps have no defined "what direction(s) to surf" goals and you can easily get around to everywhere from everywhere more or less, e.g. surf_greatriver_xdre4m.
Linear combat maps have more or less some "what direction(s) to surf" goals and you canT get around to everywhere from everywhere at all, e.g. surf_rebel_resistance_final3.
Wild m3 surf style is most effective in arena combat maps. Awp camping is most effective in linear combat maps.
Arena combat maps have tend to be the most popular combat maps in the competetive scene, prob. because they are most based on surf (skills).

man, surf velocity... those were the days. completing surf_sandman_v2 could get you in the clan (was a hot topic back in the day). this was like 8 years ago...
who else is still around besides me that has been surfing cs:s since 2004 or early 2005? it's interesting reading that this was supposedly discovered in 1.6 in mid 2004 before HL2 release. i think it originated in cs:s. i just remember hosting servers with my friends and surfing surf_leet and surf_egypt. i think surf_legends was the beginning of skill surf for me.

I dont think u should mention spawn/top 2 spawn/top as an a varation divided from tricksurfing. These tricks have been a big part of the tricksurf community and they are not a rare case of tricks without creativity. Wraps and spawnhops as well

1. Create your account and practice editing. Try to make 10 edits before you get started on your assignment. Information on account creation can be found in the ENL 3895 section of this guide.
2. Make sure your article doesn't already exist! Search for it on Wikipedia. If it does exist, you can simply edit the existing article.
3. Use the Article Wizard to start creating your new article. This will help you create a draft space for your article. Make sure to bookmark it and share it with your group. Multiple people can edit the same draft, so only one person in your group needs to create the draft.
4. Write! Check out the links in the Helpful Resources box if you need some more guidance.
5. Hit the blue "Publish page..." button when you're done! This will allow the page to either be published or sent for review by other Wikipedia editors. Consider saving a copy of your article somewhere to ensure you have an extra copy of it. The 'Elite Wiki Writing (https://www.elitewikiwriting.com/)' link on the left is great for doing just that.
